Face-frame vs. frameless cabinetry: a maker’s honest comparison

Almost every cabinetry decision eventually arrives at this fork: face-frame or frameless. We build both, and the honest answer is that the right choice depends on the look you’re after and the way the room is detailed.

Frameless (or “European”) construction gives you full-access interiors and clean, gap-minimal fronts - the contemporary, slab-and-channel look. Face-frame construction adds a solid-wood frame to the front of the box, which reads more traditional, takes inset doors beautifully, and is forgiving in older homes that aren’t perfectly square.

Neither is “better.” Frameless suits a crisp modern kitchen; face-frame suits a paneled study or a transitional home. What matters more than the method is the execution - the reveals, the grain matching, the finish - and that’s the same standard either way.
